Cement tiles - also called encaustic tiles - are made by hand according to production process developed in southern France towards the end of the 19th century. Nowadays, the world'd major production center for cement tiles is Morocco.
We discovered the beauty of cement tiles in earnest on our first trips to Morocco ten years ago and were intrigued and so in 2006 we founded Marrakech Design. We also fell in love with the country itself and soon afterwards we bought a riad in the Old Town (Medina) of Marrakech. We spend much time there working on adding new tiles to the collection - new patterns and color combinations.
Watch our video and get a feel for what the production process is like.
In the beginning we focused on classic Moroccan patterns but we soon realized the potential in combining the traditional materilal and production process with a contemporary approach to design so in 2010 we launched our first designer line "Raval" by Mats Theselius, one of Sweden's foremost designers, known especially for a wide range of astonishing armchairs. His second liine called "Kelim" was introduced in 2012.
Early in 2012 we also presented a new designer collaboration with Stockholm based architects Claesson Koivisto Rune. Their new designs - Casa, Stone and Dandelion - have already gotten a lot of press and were awarded the Elle Deco International Design Award in 2013. They come in more than ten different color combinations each; multipe layouts are possible which adds to the versatility of the designs. During 2015 we launched a second collection by Claesson Koivisto Rune - this time five different patterns: Bow, Kimono, Lily, Moonrise and Orchard.
In addition to our own product ranges we also sell tiles from Popham design. The company is based in Marrakech and owned and managed by two American designers that have created an extensive and exciting, new line of tiles.
